Hydraulic Empty Beam Trolley for Textile Manufacturing

Making Textile Beam Handling Easier on the Shop Floor

Moving empty textile beams from one department to another may seem straightforward, but their size, weight, and shape can make them difficult to handle manually.

A textile manufacturer needed a safer and more practical way to lift and move empty beams across the production floor. The equipment had to be easy for operators to use, flexible enough to handle different beam sizes, and capable of working without an electrically powered lifting system.

Seashore Solutions developed a Hydraulic Empty Beam Trolley specifically for this requirement. As part of our Manufacturing, Prototyping & Sourcing capabilities, the trolley was designed to move underneath the beam, lift it from floor level using a foot-operated hydraulic system, and make interdepartmental transport easier for operators.

The Challenge

In textile manufacturing, beams regularly need to move between different stages of production. Even when empty, these beams can be long, bulky, and difficult for operators to lift or reposition.

The client wanted a dedicated handling solution that could:

  • Pick up beams directly from floor level
  • Reduce manual lifting effort
  • Handle different beam sizes
  • Move easily between departments
  • Be simple for operators to use
  • Work without electrical power
  • Fit naturally into the existing production environment

The challenge was to create something practical and reliable without making the equipment unnecessarily complex.

Our Engineering Approach

The solution was a low-profile trolley designed to slide underneath the textile beam.

Once the trolley is positioned correctly, the operator uses a foot-operated hydraulic pump to raise the beam. A hydraulic cylinder works together with a scissor-lifting mechanism to lift the cradle and support the beam.

After the beam is raised, the trolley can be moved across the production floor using its castor wheels.

The engineering approach reflects the same practical design principles used in our Machine Design & Development projects—developing equipment around actual operating requirements, component loads, manufacturability, and shop-floor usability.

This arrangement gives operators a controlled way to pick up, lift, and transport textile beams without relying entirely on manual lifting or powered overhead equipment.

How the Trolley Works

  1. Position the Trolley: The trolley is moved underneath the textile beam and aligned with the beam barrel.
  2. Lift the Beam: The operator uses the foot-operated hydraulic pump to activate the lifting system.
  3. Raise and Support: The hydraulic cylinder and scissor mechanism lift the cradle, raising the beam from floor level.
  4. Move to the Next Department: Once securely lifted, the beam can be transported using the trolley’s castor-wheel arrangement.
  5. Lower at the Required Location: At the destination, the hydraulic system allows the beam to be lowered into the required position.

Results Achieved

The completed trolley gave the client a more practical way to handle empty textile beams during day-to-day production.

  • Instead of physically lifting the beam from the floor, operators can position the trolley underneath it and use the hydraulic system to raise it. This makes beam handling easier and reduces the amount of physical effort required during routine movement.
  • Once lifted, the beam can be moved on the trolley from one production area to another. This gives the team a dedicated handling method instead of relying on improvised movement or repeated manual repositioning.
  • One of the most useful features of the design is its low-profile structure. The trolley can move underneath the beam, allowing it to be lifted directly from its resting position without first having to raise or reposition it manually.
  • The trolley was designed to work with a range of textile beam dimensions. It can accommodate disc diameters from 800 mm to 1,250 mm and beam lengths from 1 meter to 3 meters, making it suitable for different production requirements.
  • The foot-operated hydraulic pump keeps the lifting process straightforward. The operator can lift the beam without requiring an electrical lifting system, making the trolley simple to use on the shop floor.
  • Castor wheels allow the trolley to be moved through the production area after the beam has been lifted. This makes it easier to transfer beams between departments as part of the normal production workflow.
  • The hydraulic cylinder and scissor-lift arrangement provide a structured way to raise the beam from floor level. This gives operators more control over the lifting process compared with manual handling.
  • Rather than adapting a generic trolley, the equipment was developed around the beam dimensions, load requirements, and handling process of the textile operation. This application-focused approach is also central to our Product & Value Engineering work, where designs are developed or improved around functionality, manufacturability, and practical production requirements.

Business Impact

The Hydraulic Empty Beam Trolley helped create a more practical internal handling process by providing:

  • Easier beam movement between departments
  • Reduced manual lifting requirements
  • Floor-level beam pickup
  • Compatibility with different beam sizes
  • Simple foot-operated lifting
  • Better mobility within production areas
  • A dedicated solution designed specifically for textile manufacturing
